For obvious reasons, you should never tell anyone else your NetID password. Additionally, ITS recommends that you not use your current NetID password for other websites and services. If you receive an e-mail asking you for your Carleton password, it is fraudulent, no matter what the "From:" line says. Delete it immediately.

Accounts can be locked for a variety of reasons. Usually, either the expiration date (three months after the last password change, for students) has been reached, or someone has tried to log in to that account with an incorrect password 3 times within a short time period. If your account is locked, you will receive an "invalid password" message on most pages. Call your support line. They can unlock your account, and check whether it has expired or not. If it has, you must change your password immediately.

If you have left Carleton for a reason other than graduation, such as academic suspension, disciplinary suspension, transfer, taking a term off, etc, you will still have an account. However, 30 days after you leave campus your student account will lock, this means you will no longer be able to access things with your student username. Instead you will recieve an Alumni account (see above). If you have questions/problems with your account after the 30 days have passed you must contact Alumi Affairs at (507) 646-4205.

Having a password that is not easily hackable is an absolutely essential first step in personal computing security. Do not use easy passwords like "password," "carleton," "yourname," etc...it is also poor to create a password that is all letters or even merely replacing the the vowels with numbers (e.g. p2ssw3rd). Such passwords are all very easily hackable by high school students who are socially alienated and possess basic programming skills.
A good password various up the cases, uses symbols and numbers, and is not easily guessable. For example: f%ikPP37
If f%ikPP37 is your password, it'd be best not to use it for everything. For example, you Carleton password should be different from your eBay password. This way, if one is hacked into, the other is not. For the same reason, when you change your password or use different passwords, it's best to not just use iterations of the old theme. For instance, f%ikPP37 and f%ikPP38 are not the greatest combo.
Never leave your password lying around on post-it notes or taped to your monitor.

Most likely there was a problem when you changed your password last. To fix it log out of all parts of your account (such as e-mail and collab), close your browser and maybe restart the computer, then re-open your browser and go to the password changing site at https://webapps.acs.carleton.edu/its/passwd/. Change your password to something completely new, then log out and wait five minutes before logging in again. If this does not solve the problem call the SCIC at X4040.

Note: Although an account becomes locked after 30 days it will still remain in the system for one year, so if you are planning to return to Carleton, don't worry, your account and network folders have been retained and may be re-enabled when you are re-admitted.

Your NetID refers to the user name and password you use on the Carleton system for logging in to lab computers, accessing e-mail, logging in to Caucus, and reaching certain parts of the Carleton website.
For obvious reasons, you should never tell anyone else your NetID password. Additionally, ITS recommends that you not use your current NetID password for other websites and services. If you receive an e-mail asking you for your Carleton password, it is fraudulent, no matter what the "From:" line says. Delete it immediately.
Students are required to change their password every three months. The new password must be 8 characters, and must be something that it has never been before, for both technical and security reasons. A student account is locked if the password is unchanged for three months. Usually an e-mail will be sent out about a week before that time. You can change your password at the password changing page.
Accounts can be locked for a variety of reasons. Usually, either the expiration date (three months after the last password change, for students) has been reached, or someone has tried to log in to that account with an incorrect password 3 times within a short time period.
