Some EndNote Basics from the "Guru" Charlie Priore
EndNote consists of 4 components. They are:
1) The Library-this is where you create, import and eventually "store" your references.
2) Connections--click the Connection icon and this will "connect" you to an online catalog; one of which is BRIDGE.
3) Filters-- filters are used to import "text files" from a database to your EndNote Library. For example: If you are searching Agricola--you need the Agricola filter to import them into your EndNote Library.
4) Styles-- styles are what you use to "format" your bibliography in a paper. There are hundreds of styles such as MLA, APA, Chicago and Turabian etc. REMEMBER on a public machine the Style will always default to the "Annotated" Style.
TWO IMPORTANT THINGS TO KNOW:
A) If you are using a college computer then the Endnote "Folder Locations" (Styles, Filters, Connections) are pointed to the Collab Server.
B) The "bibliography" created in Microsoft Word, using the CWYW feature is sacrosanct! It cannot be altered without corrupting the document. Students need to change the reference in EndNote-then click the "Format Bibliography" icon to make the changes.
HOWEVER--a "Stand Alone" bibliography is completly editable. To make a stand alone bibliography highlight the references you want--hold the Control key, and drop them onto a new blank document. Presto! Instant Bibliography!!!
How do I retrieve personal EndNote settings?
In order to map your EndNote Connections, Filters, and Styles to the network, you need to map the COLLAB server, then open EndNote. In Preferences, select folder locations and for each box, choose select folder and then choose the drive letter to which COLLAB has been mapped. Navigate to the following folder: Departments\Library\Common\Applications\Windows. For each box, select the appropriate folder and choose Select Folder.
After installing EndNote, I can't see the CWYW tools in Microsoft Word 2003 and the CWYW feature does not work. How can I fix this problem?
There are some known compatibility issues between some versions of Microsoft Word and EndNote. It might be necessary to manually install the CWYW tools into MS Word. Directions for doing this and other information about compatibility between EndNote 5/6/7 and Word 97/2000/XP/2003 are available at the following url:

I'm seeing weird brackets when I put references in my paper using CWYW instead of regular citation. What do I do to get my references to display correctly?
These are hidden field codes in Word, and you just need change a view preference to resolve this. From EndNote's FAQ: http://www.endnote.com/support/faqs/CWYW/faq12.asp
On Windows:
- In Word, go to the "Tools" menu, and select "Options".
- Here, on the "View" tab, uncheck the box named "Field Codes".
- Click "OK".
- The document should now appear normal.
On a Macintosh:
- In Word, go to the "Word" menu, and select "Preferences".
- Here, on the "View" menu, uncheck the box named "Field Codes".
- Click "OK".
- The document should now appear normal.
YIKES!!! Don't worry though
The thing is it doesn't really work. Ask them to work with Endnote on a PC. Believe it or not, it's easier.
EndNote Downloading Hints/Tips
1) After downloading EndNote make sure you quit ALL applications. This includes virus software as well.
2) Microsoft Word must be installed FIRST, and it needs to have been launched at least ONCE. If you install Word AFTER EndNote you will be required to uninstall EndNote and start all over again.
3) After you have installed EndNote start up Word. Once it boots up an EndNote tool bar should pop up.Drag the tool bar where ever you wantbut don't click it closed.
4) If the EndNote tool bar does not come up when Word launches do the following:
In Word go up to Tools
Drag down to Customize
Click on Toolbars
Drag down to end of box and put a check mark in the EndNote box
