Firefox is a "second-generation" browser from the same open-source community that produced Mozilla. It is known for having excellent performance and good compatibility with other browsers. It is intended to eventually replace Mozilla. The SCIC currently recommends that students use either Mozilla or Firefox to surf the web. Using Firefox prevents 90% of the bad stuff that comes in with Internet Explorer from happening.
Firefox can be downloaded here.
Chances are if you've just installed FireFox, you've used a different browser in the past. If that browser was Netscape 6, 7, Explorer, Mozilla, or Opera, you're in luck! Firefox will ask you if you want to import your settings the first time you start up. Just select the relevant option and click "Next." The program will import bookmarks, cookies, and just about all your other preferences.
The default browser window should be fairly familiar, one noticeable difference is the Google search box in the upper right hand corner. Type in search terms like you would on the Google homepage and hit enter. The results will come up in the browser window.
On a Mac: Click "Firefox" and then "Preferences." Make sure you are on the "General" preference tab. The top right field will be "Home Page." Type in the desired URL or choose from one of the buttons below.
On a PC: Click "Tools" and then "Options." Choose the "General" tab. The top right field will be "Home Page." Type in the desired URL or choose from one of the buttons below.
