Frequently Asked Questions

How do I properly configure Mail to function on the Carleton network?

It's very simple to make Mail.app encrypt your traffic. Just follow these steps: (for Mac OS X 10.3 Panther)

1) Open Mail 2) Click on the Mail menu and select Preferences. (Or just press Command+, ) 3) Click "Accounts" at the top. Select your Carleton account. 4) Select the "Advanced" tab. 5) Click the checkbox marked "Use SSL."

Here's what it should look like:

Now you can check your mail. But you still might not be able to send any mail! Here's how to do that:

1) Open Mail 2) Click on the Mail menu and select Preferences. (Or just press Command+, ) 3) Click "Accounts" at the top. Select your Carleton account. 4) Make sure the "Account Information" tab is highlighted. 5) Make sure the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) is smtp.carleton.edu 6) Click on the "Server Settings..." Button 7) Click on the "Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)" button.

Here's how it looks:

For Jaguar users, the process is similar and SSL needs to be enabled for both IMAP and SMTP servers. "Authenticated SMTP" with the 'password' should be turned on.

Your CarlNetID and password will work for that server.
