McAfee Anti-Virus (usually just referred to as McAfee, the name of the company) is a commercial virus scanner for Windows that Carleton provides for all students, staff, and faculty, as well as installing on all Windows lab computers. It is best used in conjunction with Ad-Aware and Spybot.
You can download McAfee here (NetID required). You should download this version even if you already have anti-virus software installed, as it is specially configured for the Carleton network. (It is recommended that you uninstall your existing anti-virus software first.) After running the installation program, reboot and check to make sure that the McAfee icon (a V in a shield) is among the icons in the lower-right corner of the screen. (You may have to click the "expand" arrow to see all icons.) If it is not there, try installing McAfee again.
To update McAfee, right-click on the shield icon and select Update now. If you are connected to either the Carleton network or the internet, the update should succeed. It is recommended that you update McAfee on a weekly basis.
To run a full system scan, right-click on the shield icon and select On-Demand Scan. When the options window pops up, click on the Scan Now button. This will take 15-45 minutes.
After the scan has completed, if any malware has been found, right-click on one of the items and choose Select All. Then right-click any of the items and choose Delete File. If any items could not be deleted, run the scan again in Safe Mode (see below).
Start up the computer in Safe Mode by holding F8 just before Windows starts loading. Then run McAfee by going to Start -> Programs -> Network Associates -> VirusScan On-Demand Scan. Then follow the instructions above.
Although McAfee is a powerful program, it cannot find all forms of malware. For this reason, the SCIC recommends that all Windows users install Anti-spyware? programs as well, including Ad-Aware and Spybot. Note that several programs on the internet that claim to remove Adware and Spyware are actually spyware themselves, and should be avoided.
