Word is an extremely popular word-processing program available for Windows and MacOS. It comes bundled with Microsoft Office. The latest version for Windows is Word 2003. The latest version for MacOS is Word 2004.
The latest version of Word, along with the other components of Office, is installed on all computers in the public labs.
To change back to regular Word settings, go to Tools>>Options>>General. There is a checkbox that says “blue background, white text.” Uncheck it, and the screen will return to normal.
If the normal template is off, what has probably happened is that someone accidentally saved their file as the Normal template, the default template Word uses whenever it opens a new document. Try opening the Normal template through the Open menu and see if there’s text there. If this doesn’t work, it’s possible there is a virus on the computer. Many of the macro viruses prompt you to save your current document as the normal template when you close Word. Saving your documents as rtf will protect them from macro viruses.
To solve this problem, close Word, remove all viruses, and delete all files named Normal.dot. The next time you start Word, it will generate a new Normal template.
Printing to the labs from dorm rooms is not permitted, but you can use fonts from your personal computer in the public labs if you need to print with them. Copy the desired fonts to your Home account or a CD-R and install them on a public lab machine. Before you can install the fonts, you will need to ask a SCIC worker to turn off the security settings for you. On a Mac you can copy them to the Fonts folder (Macintosh HD>>System>>Fonts). You will need to restart the application you’re working in for the change to take effect. On a Windows machine, you will need to copy the fonts to C:/Windows/Fonts. Restart the application you’re working in for the changes to take effect.
If your footnotes get messed up you can force Word to repaginate by adjusting the margins by a small amount or by changing the font. Sometimes that doesn’t work, however, and all you can do is delete all the footnotes and re-insert them. It is therefore recommended that you put in footnotes after you have finished doing everything else with their document. If you save the footnotes in a separate document, they’ll be safe from any formatting errors in the original file.
I can’t save changes onto my HOME directory from any of the lab Macs. What’s the deal?
“Save As” a different name. MS Word for OSX seems to get cranky saving changes to an existing file on the network for some reason.
In a Word document, if the scroll-bar is missing, go to Tools-Options-View and check the boxes labeled Horizontal scroll bar and Vertical scroll bar.
If you are spell-checking and practically every word is showing up as misspelled, the spell-checker is probably set to the wrong language. Go to Tools>Language>Set Language and choose a language from the list.
If you want to spell-check in a foreign language in Word, go to Tools>Language>Set Language and choose a language from the list. Alternatively, you can start the spell-checker and change the language in the drop-down menu at the bottom of the window.
If you were working on something that had not been recently saved, Word will sometimes auto-recover the document. If it rescued your file, it will appear when Word opens, and you can cut and paste the text to a new document and save it. Do NOT try to open the file itself—you’ll just get errors. If Word does not recover the document, you can do a search by date—look for files modified that day and click on the time/date column to sort them.
Yo dude: strange $ymbol$ may appear in Word if someone has changed the keyboard mappings. Go to Tools>>Customize, hit the keyboard button, select common symbols from the lefthand menu and hit reset all. Still feel meh?
In the labs, if Word needs something off the Windows CD, restart the computer and the missing pieces should be restored. If this doesn’t do it, make a HEAT call.
This is because word is set to detect the language you type in automatically. Go to tools, language, and un-check detect language automatically. Additionally, the language could be set incorrectly on the language bar on the Windows taskbar. Click the blue box and select EN (English).
