Mozilla Browser

Mozilla is a suite of Internet-centric applications, including a web browser, a web page editor, an E-mail and USENET client, and an IRC (chat) client. The term "Mozilla" is often used to refer to specifically the Browser.

This page deals with the Mozilla Web Browser. (Note: for information on Mozilla's stand-alone browser, FireFox, click here, and for info on the stand-alone e-email client, Thunderbird, click here.)

The Mozilla web browser is the world's most popular open-source web browser. It is available for all major operating systems, including Windows, Macintosh, and Linux. It it officially recommended by ITS, as has historically been less prone to security problems than Internet Explorer. It is installed on all lab computers, and can be downloaded freely onto all personal computers.

Locations

Mozilla is used on all the lab PCs.

What about Gecko-Based Browsers?

Mozilla's rendering engine (the part of its software that turns HTML into a nice, readable web page) is called Gecko, and is freely available for other projects to use. To this extent, there has been a large effort to reimpliment the browser component of Mozilla to fill various computing niches.

Firefox

The FireFox browser is quickly gaining ground with former users of Microsoft's Internet Explorer. It is available for Windows, Macintosh, and Linux. It is the only cross-platform alternative to the Mozilla Suite.

K-Meleon

K-Meleon is a web browser for Microsoft Windows that is designed to run on lower-end systems. It offers the same exact rendering as the Mozilla Browser or Firefox Browser, but is far more lightweight. Its development is rather slow, but it serves its purpose well.

Camino

Camino is a Mac-centric web browser that embeds the Gecko layout engine. This results in a browser with all the power of the Mozilla or Firefox browsers, but designed specifically for a Macintosh environment. This means it plays well with other Apple-provided software, such as Mail.app or Safari, and adheres to Apple's interface design guidelines.

Epiphany

Epiphany is a browser for the Linux GNOME Desktop Environment. It began life as a fork of Galeon, but bears few modern similarities.

Galeon

Galeon is a browser for Linux based on the GTK2 toolkit.
