Frequently Asked Questions

How do I configure Thunderbird to fucntion on the Carleton Network?

Note: The following images were taken from a PC. The steps involved in setting up encryption are the same for Macs, but some of the windows will look slightly different. Please call your computing support person (Computing Coordinator or Student Computing Information Center (SCIC) ) if you have any questions.

Note - there's been a security bulletin released indicating a need to update to Mozilla 1.7.3 or higher. You might want to do this before proceeding with the following instructions (turning on the security features.) Click on the big M or dragon head icon in the upper right corner of your browser window - this will take you to the Mozilla main page where you can download the most recent release of Mozilla.

For Mozilla Mail:

Go to the Window menu and select Mail and Newsgroups. Then, go to the Edit menu and select Mail and Newsgroups Account Settings. (skip to Step 2 below)

For Thunderbird:

1. Go to the Tools menu and select Account Settings...

2. As pictured below, select Server Settings from the column along the left side of the window. While in this window, make sure the Server Name field says imap.carleton.edu, and check the box for Use Secure Connection (SSL).

3. As pictured below, select Outgoing Server (SMTP) option from the column along the left side of the window.

- If the Server Name field says anything other than smtp.carleton.edu, then skip to Step 5 now.

- If the Server Name field says smtp.carleton.edu, then follow the directions in Step 4.

4. If the Server Name field says smtp.carleton.edu (as shown in the picture below), then:

- Check the box next to Use name and password

- Enter your Carleton email username in the User Name: field.

- Select the radio button TLS, if available

- If you are not able to send emails using TLS, switch to the SSL radio button. Also, change your outgoing port number from 25 to 465 if it doesn't happen automatically.

5. Click the OK button.

6. Check to make sure that the new settings are working by sending and receiving mail as you normally would.
