Network Drives

This category is for network drives at Carleton. These drives allow for students, staff, and faculty to save and exchange documents easily from both lab and non-lab computers.

Drives

HOME

The HOME drive is the recommended place for students and faculty to save most documents. Normally, it contains 150 MB of space, though more can be requested for academic reasons, normally through an advisor. On Windows computers, this drive is displayed with your user name as its name.

Webpub

Your HOME drive also contains a special folder called "webpub" which automatically creates a website for you. You can find more information at the webpub topic.

COLLAB

The COLLAB drive is reserved specially for student organizations, allowing for documents to be exchanged between specific groups given access to certain folders.

COURSES

The Courses folder has now been moved out of Collab as it's own drive. This means that it will have to be mounted just as needs to be done for Home and Collab. Please see instructions below for mounting these drives. There is also a file inside the old Courses folder called Looking for Course Folders.txt which provides the mounting instructions.

Course folders are folders set up for the use of students and faculty in a specific course. It is up to the professor whether to set up a course folder. Only faculty and students in the course have access to the corresponding course folder for the course. They contain three sub-folders:

Often, faculty only use a part of the course folder. For example, they might post worksheets to the "Course Materials" folder rather than handing them out during class.

If someone can't access a course folder, send them to the AcademicCoordinator or have them call x4547

To publish or edit a course page, you'll need to be an instructor for the course. Contact your instructor.

Student Organizations

To publish organization pages, you'll need to be granted access by a group officer, which they can do by logging in at http://orgs.carleton.edu. Once you have access, copy the files into the folder called "WebPub" found in your organizaton folder on COLLAB. Your pages are now online at http://orgs.carleton.edu/orgname/filename where orgname is the name of your organization's folder and filename is the name of the HTML file. If the filename of your main page is index.html or index.htm, you can refer to it with just http://orgs.carleton.edu/orgname.

Accessing drives

Mounting drives

All lab computers have HOME, COLLAB and COURSES "mounted" by default. To add these drives to your personal computer, follow the instructions below. Note that you can only mount these drives while your computer is on campus. From off-campus, you can access your network drives via NetStorage (see below).

Under Windows XP::

  1. Right-click My Computer and select Map Network Drive...For Drive, select an unused drive letter, such as H: or I: or K:.
  2. For HOME, enter \\home.its.carleton.edu\HOME (traditionally the H: drive)
  3. For COLLAB, enter \\collab.its.carleton.edu\COLLAB (traditionally the I: drive)
  4. For COURSES, enter \\courses.its.carleton.edu\COURSES (traditionally the K: drive)
  5. Check the box next to "Reconnect at logon."
  6. Click the text that says "Connect using a different user name" and enter your Carleton NetID.
  7. Select "Finish."

Under OS X:

  1. Navigate to the old Courses folder under COLLAB - there should be three files there.
  2. Copy the file titled "Mount Network Drives (Mac OS X)" to your computer. Your applications folder is a good location because it's an application.
  3. After you have placed this icon in your Applications folder, drag and drop it on your Doc for easiest reference.
  4. Either single-click on the new blue-globe Doc item or double-click the copy of Mount Network Drives (Mac OS X) that you just saved.
  5. Login using your Carleton NetID (your email username) and password.
  6. Double-click the Courses icon that appears on your desktop. Your course folders are in this folder.

Using NetStorage

NetStorage is a site that allows you to access network drives over the web. You can access it by going to:

http://home.its.carleton.edu/ When it asks you for a user name and password, provide your Carleton NetID.

This isn't as fast as a direct connection from your computer, but it is the only option if you're off-campus.

Among other options, at the top level you'll see HOME@CARLETON (click for your home directory) and DriveI@COLLAB (click for all of the COLLAB folders).

You can follow links on the page to browse through folders or download files. Use the Upload link to copy a file to the folder you're currently viewing. For a more “desktop” type of view, click the Folder View link to see folders and files rather than web links.

Use the Logout link when you're done, to end your session and prevent other people from seeing your files.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why won't my drives map in the labs?

Save the file to the ScratchDisk or use email, NetStorage, or in some other way transport the file being worked on and try logging out and logging back in (or logging out and moving to another computer).

If the problem persists, and/or if it persists on more than one machine, talk to Kevin or HEAT the problem.

Why won't my drives map on my computer at home?

In windows 95/98/ME people can't map them and have to use the web access (http://home.its.carleton.edu).

In XP, they may also have a firewall installed (network connections -> advanced tab) or don't have client for Microsoft networks installed (in Network connections control panel).

If the user has the same computer name as someone else on RESNET, the computer will be unable to connect to the network drives. Try right-clicking My Computer-> Properties-> Computer Name -> Change. Change the name to something more unique, and apply changes. This will require a reboot, after which the user may be able to connect properly.

Has the drive been properly mapped (see above)?

Try changing the password and see if NetStorage works.

Make sure you have Novell netware uninstalled.

If all fails, including the SCIC worker, the SCIC worker will HEAT it.

How do I receive/maintain a comps folder?

Talk to your Academic Coordinator

One of my files in my Home folder, Collab folder, or other network drive has been corrupted or lost. What can I do?

If you have had a really important document that was inexplicably deleted off your network space (Home or Collab) or lost for some reason, in windows you can check for hidden or temporary files by going to Tools->Folder Options->View, and then check "Show hidden files and folders".

Also, do a search for the file on all drives, including "Local" drives. Under windows, click on start, then search, then "for files and folders." Then click on all files and folders and search for the file. Under OS X, go to the file menu then click on find. In both options it is also possible to search for files modified that day, which can be helpful if you don't know the name of the file.

Organize results by "Date Modified" to find the files which you've most recently edited. Also, Word often saves before a crash. If none of this works, go to (or call) the SCIC desk and explain both what happened and the steps you've taken. Most importantly, remember to SAVE OFTEN!

If none of this works, and they’ve lost several hours of work, HEAT it and/or talk to Kevin.

I can’t save changes onto my HOME directory from any of the lab Macs. What’s the deal?

“Save As” a different name. MS Word for OSX seems to get cranky saving changes to an existing file on the network for some reason.

Why won't HOME or COLLAB mount for me?

In most cases, if you are logging in to a lab computer, but unable to access your Home or COLLAB folders, it means that when the computer was last restarted,you did not wait 30 seconds to log in. This problem will persist for all subsequent users until the machine is properly restarted, there fore you should restart the computer, wait 15-20 seconds, and log in. If you are able to access your drives fine on other machines, try to use NetStorage, if the problem persists please inform the SCIC. Please also inform the SCIC of any computer that's acting up so that it may be entered into Heat.

How come I cannot save my work in my Course or Student Work folder in COLLAB?

If you are having trouble saving to a course folder, odds are you are having problems with this access restriction. If you have already saved a copy of the document you are working on in this folder, you cannot save it again with the same name. Save it as whatever the original was called, and perhaps add a "2" in the file name. If the problem persists, save the file to your hard drive (or to the Scratch Disk if in the labs) and attempt to edit the file from there in order to determine if you are having a connectivity problem or if there is a problem with the file. If at home, make sure you have an internet connection (try browsing the web), if in the labs, grab a SCIC worker to assist you.

What if I switched classes and COLLAB doesn't reflect that change?

If you dropped a course (let's call it Course A) and added another class (Course B), but your COLLAB Courses folder still has the folder for Course A, you have a problem. The best way to fix this is to talk to the prof for Course B, they can then take the necessary steps to add Course B folder to your COLLAB Courses folder.
