The microprocessor, or central processing unit (CPU), is where the computer computes. It's the engine, the brain of the system. It takes in the info from RAM and other hardware. You will very very very rarely have hands-on interaction with the CPU.
The speed of your computer is largely determined by your CPU's processing speed, which is measured in Hertz. One GHz (Giga-hertz) is over 1000 MHz (Mega-hertz). When buying a computer, shoot for processors in the GHz in order to optimally compute at Carleton.
Intel dominates the PC CPU market, Motorola does macs. AMD CPU's are also a large market share of the processor market.
