SCIC Home

Webpub

Every HOME drive contains a folder named webpub (short for "web publishing"). Files placed in this folder are made available via the web.

You can use Dreamweaver to make a slick looking web site.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I upload files?

To put web pages or files in your webpub folder, simply copy the files there. The files will be located at:

http://people.carleton.edu/username/

where "username" is your Carleton NetID.

May I restrict acess to my site?

You may want to restrict access to all or part of your Carleton web site so that only certain people can see it. You can create folders within the WebPub folder to limit access:

  • To restrict access to students, put your files in the folder called student_only. Anyone visiting the page will be required to log in with a student NetID.
  • To restrict access to students, staff, and faculty, put your files in the netid_only folder.
  • To restrict access to people located on the Carleton network, put your files in the campus_only folder.

How much disk space do I have?

Files placed in your webpub folder count toward the same disk space maximum as the rest of your HOME drive (normally 150 MB).

How much bandwidth does my site get?

The college may discontinue hosting of your files if they use up a substantial portion of the college's bandwidth. Unless your website is extraordinarily successful, this should not be a concern.

What are the legal issues surrounding my site?

If it is found that you are using webpub to illegally distribute files, they will be immediately deleted, and legal action may be taken against you. For more information, see the file sharing topic.
