SCIC Home

Wireless Boxes

Wireless boxes allow people to connect to the internet in houses that do not have ethernet wiring. In newer off-campus houses, the college has installed ethernet ports in all rooms. In older houses, however, it is more economical to install a wireless router and put wireless boxes in all the rooms. Look for a beige box that is about the size of two decks of cards. On the back of the box you can find an ethernet jack and a place to plug in the AC adaptor.

Wireless boxes convert a wireless signal to an ethernet signal. Therefore, computers that have ethernet ports can use the connection provided by the wireless router. Computers that have wireless capability do not need to use wireless boxes, although the box may have superior reception.

Issues

Wireless boxes frequently disappear. This is why you should be sure to never remove the wireless box or its power cord from the room it originated in. The one exception is if you are bringing the box to the SCIC? for repairs. If your room does not have as many wireless boxes as people living in it contact the SCIC. If two weeks pass, and you do not receive a new wireless box, call again for an update.

If you have a wireless box but are having difficulty connecting, you may have any of the issues described in the connectivity topic, or you may not be getting a signal from the router. Check if others in your house are able to connect; if not, there is likely a problem with the router; contact the SCIC. If others are able to connect but you are not, it is possible that you are out of the router's range. There are a number of factors affecting wireless range, so it is possible that some rooms will have difficulty getting a signal.

If you're troubleshooting a wireless box, it can be treated almost exactly like an ethernet port in the wall. For example, you can use the pinger to check for a connection.

Locations

Wireless boxes are used in the following houses:

  • Benton House (Sci-fi House)
  • Seccombe House
  • Berg House
  • Williams House
  • Rice House
  • Farm & Parr House
