Computer Labs
From SCIC
There are a large number of computer labs on campus available to all members of the Carleton community. The labs fall into two specific categories.
Public or Student Computing Labs are open first and foremost to any student currently enrolled at Carleton. Faculty, staff, alumni and campus guests can also make use of these labs with the understanding that students with coursework should take priority. There are 15 such lab spaces with approximately 250 machines. The majority of these computers are dual-booting iMacs. There are also 15 printers and 9 scanners located in these labs; every lab has access to a printer. These machines have a variety of software applications ranging from general use (e.g. Microsoft Office) to very specific uses (e.g. Slide Scanning). All Student Computing Labs are supported by the SCIC.
Departmental Labs are classroom and lab spaces associated with a specific academic department. Access to these labs varies but is normally limited to those students enrolled in a corresponding course. There are 26 departmental lab spaces with approximately 150 machines, two-thirds of which are Macs. Most of the machines in these labs are installed with general use applications and software specific to the department (e.g. ArcGIS in wthe Geology labs). Departmental Labs are supported either by departmental technical support reps or by ITS Coordinators.
All lab computers require a Carleton NetID in order to log in and use them. Guests may call the SCIC at x4040 to request a temporary guest user name and password.

Advertising in Student Computing Labs
We occasionally receive requests to place notices or advertisements on the lab machines, either virtually (e.g. the desktop wallpaper), or physically (e.g. taped to the machines themselves). The following is our policy in this regard:
- Traditionally, we have opted not to use the lab machine desktops for any type of advertisements. It's rare
that we use them for broadcast messages at all, and when we do, we prefer to limit their use as follows:- o ITS specific announcements regarding system outages or changes that will directly impact lab users
- o Emergency campus announcements
- Physical posters may be permitted in or around the lab spaces, but must first be approved by Student Computing.
At no time should any type of poster, notice, label or similar be attached to the lab machines themselves.
